Who - Intermediate to advanced level surfers will make the best use of this board. Surfers who are in the beginner phase but can consistently stand up and go down the line can also use this board, but there are better shapes out there for that person.
When - The Retro Ripper is designed to work in all types of conditions, it actually excels in both offshore and onshore winds which really makes this a utility board. Regarding wave size, the Retro Ripper works in stomach-chest high and above. The outline of this board is reminiscent of the Retro Gun, so don’t be afraid to take her out in the big stuff…she can hang.
What - The Retro Ripper is quite an interesting shape. The reason we say that is because this board has features of a step-up gun, performance shortboard, and small wave board all in one. Starting at the top, the Ripper has a volume forward outline which means there is more foam towards the front of the board. This is combined with a “Wedged Beak Nose”(this is an ode to classic boards back in the 70s-80s) and low entry rocker equals great paddle power and wave catching ability. Moving to the middle of the board, the Retro Ripper features a flat deck which is going to make the board nice and stable. Along with that, we have full rails with a steep taper which makes it easy to engage the rails during turns or knife the take-off if you are late. The tail uses a wing and then goes into a round tail. The wing breaks the rail line so that water detaches from the board after the wing; what this does is loosen up the tail making it much easier to pivot and complete tight maneuvers in the pocket. With the round tail, this makes the board feel smooth, consistent, and predictable; a feeling we all enjoy in a good board. One last thing that we wanted to mention is the concave, it is flat under the deck of the board and then transitions to a deep double concave through the tail rocker with a vee out the end. This is going to make for easy rail to rail transitions and allow the Retro Ripper to cut through wind chop.
