Surfboard Leashes – Common Questions

What length leash do I need?

Match the leash to your board length and round up: a 6'0 shortboard takes a 6' leash, a 7'0 mid-length a 7' leash, a 9'0 longboard a 9' or 10' leash. A leash that is shorter than the board lets it snap back at you; one that is much longer drags and tangles.

What is the difference between a comp leash and a regular leash?

Thickness. Comp or lite leashes are thin (around 5 mm) for small waves and lighter boards, with the least drag. Regular leashes (around 6 to 7 mm) are the all-round choice for everyday surf. Big-wave leashes are 8 mm and up for maximum strength. Thicker cord is stronger but creates more drag, so pick the thinnest cord that suits the waves you surf.

Should I get an ankle leash or a calf leash?

Shortboard and mid-length leashes attach at the ankle. Longboard leashes are often made to wear on the calf or just below the knee, which keeps the cord out from under your feet when you walk the board. If a leash is sold as a longboard or knee leash it is cut longer and built for a calf cuff.

How long does a leash last, and how do I make it last longer?

Leashes are a wear item. Rinse the cuff and swivels in fresh water after surfing, check the cord for nicks or stretched sections, and never leave a leash wrapped tightly around the tail in the sun. Replace it at the first sign of damage; a leash costs far less than a lost or dinged board.

Does a leash fit any board?

Yes, as long as the board has a leash plug or a leash loop. The leash string loops through the plug and the rail saver wraps around the string, so the same leash moves between boards of a similar length.
