Surfboard Bags – Common Questions

What size board bag do I need?

Board bags are sized by board length and are cut a little longer than the stated size, so a 6'0 bag fits a 6'0 board with a bit of room. Pick the bag size at or just above your board's length. Width matters too: fish, hybrid and mid-length bags are cut wider and shorter in the nose than shortboard bags, and longboard bags are wider again.

Day bag, travel bag or board sock?

A board sock is a knit cover that protects against scratches and sun between the car and the beach. A day bag adds light padding (around 5 mm) and a zip, which is what most people use for everyday driving and storage. A travel bag has thicker padding (10 mm or more), reinforced nose and tail, and often room for two or three boards for flying.

How do I pack a board for a flight?

Remove the fins, put a towel or bubble wrap over the nose and tail, slide the board into the travel bag deck-up, and fill gaps with wetsuits or towels so nothing can shift. If you fly with more than one board, a double or triple travel bag with dividers protects the boards from each other. Check your airline's surfboard fee and length limit before you book.

Will a board bag protect against heat?

A bag with a reflective silver exterior cuts the heat that reaches the board, but no bag makes it safe to leave a board in a hot car for hours. Heat delaminates boards. Use the bag for the drive and get the board into the shade when you arrive.

Do board bags fit boards with fins on?

Day bags and socks are usually roomy enough to fit a board with the fins still in. For travel bags, take the fins out; it protects the fins, the board and the bag.
