Surfboard Wax – Common Questions

Which wax temperature do I need?

Surf wax is made for a water temperature range, so match it to where you surf. Ranges differ slightly by brand; Sticky Bumps rates Cold for water below 60°F (15°C), Cool for 58–68°F (14–20°C), Warm for 64–74°F (18–24°C) and Tropical for water above 75°F (24°C). Wax that is too soft for the water smears and goes slippery; wax that is too hard will not build bumps.

What wax should I use in Southern California or Florida?

Southern California water runs from the mid 50s°F in winter to around 70°F in late summer, so Cold or Cool wax most of the year and Warm in late summer. Florida's Space Coast runs from the 60s°F in winter to the mid 80s in summer, so Warm in winter and Tropical through the warm months.

What is basecoat and do I need it?

Basecoat is the hardest wax and goes on a clean board first. Rubbed on in a crosshatch pattern it builds small bumps that give the softer top coat something to grip, so your wax job lasts longer and stays bumpy. Then apply the temperature wax over it. It is optional, but it makes a noticeable difference.

How do I wax a new board?

Rub a layer of basecoat over the whole standing area in a diagonal crosshatch, pressing lightly until small bumps form. Then rub your temperature wax over the top in circles or straight lines, letting it build on the bumps. Before each session a few quick passes of topcoat freshens the grip.

How often should I re-wax?

Add a thin topcoat before most sessions. Strip and re-wax completely when the wax goes flat, grey and slick, or when the season changes and you need a different temperature wax. To strip, leave the board in the sun for a few minutes, scrape with a wax comb and wipe off the residue.
