What is the FCS x Sharkbanz POD?

A compact shark deterrent made by FCS with Sharkbanz for surfers. The POD weighs 56.5 g (2 oz), straps to any leash cuff with the included FCS surf pouch, needs no battery or charging (it is always on), is waterproof to 100 m (330 ft) and ships in a magnetic-shielded box for storage and travel.

How does Sharkbanz work?

Sharks sense prey partly through electroreceptors called the ampullae of Lorenzini. Sharkbanz uses a strong permanent magnet, and according to Sharkbanz the magnetic field is an overwhelming sensation for a shark at close range, causing it to turn away. Sharkbanz says its technology is based on published research and testing, including testing by the Western Australian Government and NOAA researchers.

Does it guarantee I will not be bitten?

No. Sharkbanz describes it as a deterrent that reduces risk, not a guarantee, and it is designed for the unexpected close encounter rather than a shark that is already attacking. Use it alongside the usual precautions: avoid surfing at dawn and dusk, near river mouths or where bait fish are schooling.

Where do I wear it?

Strap the POD to your leash cuff at the ankle using the FCS pouch it comes with, so the magnet sits low in the water near your feet. It fits any leash cuff and is sized for riders ages 5 and up.

Is the magnet safe to travel with and store?

Yes. The POD comes with a magnetic-shielded storage box and is airline and TSA friendly. Keep it in the box when not in use and away from credit cards, phones, watches and other magnet-sensitive items. If you have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, check with your doctor before using any magnetic product.
