Surf Accessories – Common Questions

What accessories do I need with a new surfboard?

A leash matched to the board length, wax for your water temperature (plus a basecoat), and usually a traction pad for the tail. A board bag or sock protects the board between sessions, and if you drive to the beach, soft racks or rack pads get it there safely.

Which fin system do I need, FCS II or Futures?

It depends on the boxes in your board, not the fin brand. FCS II boxes have two short slots per fin and the fin clicks in with no screws; Futures boxes are a single long slot with a grub screw. The two systems are not interchangeable. Check your board's fin boxes before buying, and see the Surfboard Fins page for sizing and templates.

What length leash should I get?

Match the leash to your board length and round up: a 6'0 shortboard takes a 6' leash, a 7'0 mid-length a 7' leash and a 9'0 longboard a 9' or 10' leash. Longboard leashes are often made for a calf cuff.

What wax temperature do I need?

Match the wax to the water: Cold for water below 60°F, Cool for 58–68°F, Warm for 64–74°F and Tropical above 75°F (Sticky Bumps' ranges; other brands differ slightly). Southern California is mostly Cold and Cool wax with Warm in late summer; Florida is Warm in winter and Tropical through the warm months. A basecoat under the temperature wax makes the wax job last.
