FRK Plus Q&A
What size FRK Plus should I get?
Ride your regular shortboard volume. Firewire says the FRK+ is meant to be ridden slightly shorter than the original FRK, and the chart reflects that: a surfer on a 6’0 shortboard around 30 liters would ride the 5’11 FRK+ (19” x 2 5/8”, 30.6 L). The range runs 5’6 (24.1 L), 5’7 (25.0 L), 5’8 (26.1 L), 5’9 (28.2 L), 5’10 (29.0 L), 6’0 (32.2 L), 6’1 (34.1 L), 6’2 (36.1 L) and 6’4 (38.6 L).
What fins does the FRK Plus use?
Five Futures boxes – ride it as a thruster or a quad. Firewire states the FRK+ is best paired with Kelly’s KS1 fin template: the Endorfins KS1 is an upright set with incredible pivot, built with carbon inlays around a core that is 90% air. It comes in small, medium and large and in both Futures-compatible single-tab and FCS II-compatible dual-tab versions. For more drive and drawn-out turns, Kelly’s raked KSR set is the complementary opposite.
What waves is the FRK Plus for?
It is the daily driver of the Slater Designs range. Designed for performance surfing, it works in smaller waves but really starts to excel once it hits waist high or bigger. Firewire recommends 2–6 ft surf, best in average to epic conditions.
How is the FRK Plus different from the FRK?
Same board, different tail. The FRK+ swaps the FRK’s round tail for a classic squash and adjusts the concaves and fin placement to suit the squash’s extra surface area. The result is a touch more release through turns with the same drive, and Firewire says to ride it slightly shorter than the original. Riders describe it as super quick rail to rail with extremely good drive and release.
Who is the FRK Plus for?
Most intermediate and above surfers – Firewire says they will appreciate the way it gets out of your way to the point that you do not notice it is there. It feels like the most high-performance expression of your intentions possible.
What construction does the FRK Plus come in?
Firewire builds the FRK+ in I-Bolic 2.0 – an I-beam core with flex controlled at the rails by high-density foam, with a fully engineered carbon strip inlay on the bottom for extra strength. We have stocked it in I-Bolic and in I-Bolic with Volcanic basalt lamination (Firewire’s most durable finish). Each board on this page lists its construction and fin boxes.
Can I custom order an FRK Plus?
Firewire builds the FRK Plus in set stock sizes rather than true one-off customs, so there is no custom board builder for it. If the size or construction you want is not on this page, we can usually special order it for you from Firewire’s current range – contact the shop and we will check availability and lead time.
