Mash Up Quick Facts
Firewire Mash Up quick facts

| Board type | Everyday hybrid groveler – a melding of Rob’s Seaside and Dan’s Spitfire that goes fast in weak waves and drives vertically in good ones |
| Best waves | Weak waves through good waves; Firewire recommends 1–5 ft surf, skewing toward average to poor and flat conditions |
| Skill level | All levels, beginner through pro |
| Tail | Pulled-in squash tail |
| Design | Hybrid nose that keeps plenty of paddle up front; Dan Mann’s step rails through the back third pack in extra volume while keeping the rails thin; double concave running the full length of the bottom, getting more extreme from center to tail |
| Fins | Five boxes – thruster or quad. Best template: a raked or balanced set – Firewire’s Velox fin set (rake template, the baseline for all Firewire shapes) or Dan Mann’s Manncave set (balanced, slightly pivot-oriented rake). On FCS II boards, the FCS II Carver; on Futures, the Legacy R-series rake templates also fit. Firewire boards built from 2023 on come with Futures boxes; earlier boards came with either FCS II or Futures boxes, so check the fin system listed on each board. |
| Stock sizes | 5’2 to 6’6 (24.9 L to 47.4 L) |
| Sizing | A groveler: shorter and wider than your shortboard with 1–2 liters more volume; most surfers go 2–4 inches shorter than their everyday board |
| Constructions we stock | Firewire builds the Mashup in Helium. We have stocked it in Helium and in Helium with Volcanic basalt lamination |
Mash Up Q&A
What size Mash Up should I get?
Size it like a groveler: shorter and wider than your shortboard with 1–2 liters more volume. Most surfers go 2–4 inches shorter than their everyday board. A surfer on a 6’0 shortboard around 30 liters would look at the 5’6 (19 5/8” x 2 9/16”, 30.1 L) or 5’7 (31.4 L). The chart runs 5’2 (24.9 L) to 6’6 (47.4 L), with 5’8 at 32.8 L, 5’10 at 35.8 L and 6’0 at 38.5 L.
What fins does the Mash Up use?
Five boxes, so it rides as a thruster or a quad. Because it has Spitfire drive and Seaside speed built in, a raked or balanced template suits it best: Firewire’s Velox fin set is a rake template built as the performance baseline for all Firewire shapes and was designed with the Mashup in mind, and Dan Mann’s Manncave set is his balanced, slightly pivot-leaning go-to that he tests all his shapes with. On FCS II boards, the FCS II Carver is the equivalent raked template; on Futures, the Legacy R-series. Boards from 2023 on have Futures boxes; earlier Mashups came with either FCS II or Futures boxes.
What waves is the Mash Up for?
Everyday waves. With DNA from the Seaside and Spitfire it goes fast in weak waves and drives vertically in good waves – a true everyday hybrid. Firewire recommends 1–5 ft surf, skewing toward average to poor and flat conditions, and calls it the ultimate groveler you will never want to take out of your trunk.
How is the Mash Up different from the Seaside and the Spitfire?
It is literally a mash-up of the two. Rob Machado and Dan Mann mixed and matched their favorite elements of each: the Seaside’s speed and ease in weak waves, and the Spitfire’s ability to drive vertically in good waves. Compared with the quad-only, swallow-tail Seaside, the Mashup has a squash tail, five boxes and Dan’s step rail, so it feels more like a shortboard when the waves get better.
Who is the Mash Up for?
Everyone from beginners to pros. Firewire describes it as a shape that immediately makes you feel like you have speed and buoyancy to burn – newer surfers get paddle and stability, and good surfers get a groveler that still turns hard.
What construction does the Mash Up come in?
Firewire builds the Mashup in Helium – a stringerless EPS core with flex controlled by paulownia and balsa wood rails and a composite deck skin, light and lively with easy speed in everyday waves. We have also stocked it in Helium with Volcanic basalt lamination, Firewire’s most durable finish. Each board on this page lists its construction and fin boxes.
Can I custom order a Mash Up?
Firewire builds the Mash Up in set stock sizes rather than true one-off customs, so there is no custom board builder for it. If the size or construction you want is not on this page, we can usually special order it for you from Firewire’s current range – contact the shop and we will check availability and lead time.
