Sunday Quick Facts
Firewire Sunday quick facts
| Brand / shaper | Firewire Surfboards, Carlsbad, California; designed by Rob Machado |
| Board type | Cruisy twin fin that runs from a 5’6 small-wave board to a 7’3 mid-length – Rob rides both ends of the range |
| Best waves | Small to medium, mellow surf: Rob paddles the 7’0 out at Cardiff Reef for a cruise and the 5’6 at Seaside when it is good |
| Skill level | All levels – the extra volume Rob builds into it makes it forgiving |
| Tail | Rounded pin tail |
| Design | Full, forgiving outline with generous volume; the Sunday is about relaxing and gliding rather than chasing performance |
| Fins | Current Sundays are twin fins with two Futures boxes; earlier Sundays (2021–2022) came as a 2+1 with a center box and side-bite boxes in FCS II or Futures. Best template: the Machado Twin Keel fin set on the twin; a 6”–6.5” single with 4” side bites, or Rob’s FCS II Sunday single and side bites, on the 2+1 versions |
| Stock sizes | 5’6 to 7’3 (31.22 L to 56.66 L) |
| Sizing | Rob’s rule: size up your Sunday – his 5’6 is about six liters more than he would ride in a shortboard. Ride more volume and relax; the 6’4 and up behave like mid-lengths |
| Constructions we stock | Firewire built the Sunday in Helium. We have stocked it in Helium, Helium with Volcanic lamination and a limited Thunderbolt edition. The Sunday is no longer in Firewire’s current range, so stock is limited to what is listed on this page |
Sunday Q&A
What size Sunday should I get?
Rob Machado’s own advice: “size up your Sunday. Don’t be shy. Ride more volume and relax.” His 5’6 (19 3/4” x 2 1/2”, 31.22 L) carries about six liters more than he would normally ride in a shortboard, and he also rides the 7’0 (53.76 L). As a guide, a surfer on a 30-liter shortboard would look at the 5’6 or 5’9 (34.66 L) for a small-wave twin, or jump to the 6’4 (45.11 L) and up if they want the mid-length glide. The chart runs 5’6, 5’9, 6’0, 6’4, 6’8, 7’0 and 7’3.
What fins does the Sunday use?
The most recent Sundays are twin fins with two Futures boxes – Rob’s Machado Twin Keel fin set (toned-down performance keels, Futures single-tab or FCS II dual-tab) is the natural match. Earlier Sundays from 2021–2022 were set up as a 2+1: a center fin box with two side-bite boxes, in either FCS II or Futures. For those, run a 6” to 6.5” single fin with 4” side bites – Rob’s own FCS II Rob Machado Sunday single fin and side bites were made for that version. Check the fin boxes listed on each board on this page.
What waves is the Sunday for?
Mellow, fun surf. Rob describes a Sunday as a slow family day: a cruise at Cardiff Reef on the 7’0 in the afternoon and the 5’6 at Seaside before sunset if it is good. Think small to medium waves where you want glide, easy paddling and relaxed, drawn-out turns rather than a performance board.
Is the Sunday a shortboard or a mid-length?
Both – that is the point. Rob says his favorite thing about the Sunday is how it “occupies both sides of the spectrum”: the 5’6, 5’9 and 6’0 are small-wave twins, while the 6’4, 6’8, 7’0 and 7’3 glide like mid-lengths. Same outline and rounded pin, scaled up or down.
Who is the Sunday for?
Any surfer who wants to relax and ride more volume – from beginners who benefit from the forgiving outline and easy paddling to experienced surfers who want a cruisy twin or a mid-length for small days. It rewards sizing up rather than chasing the smallest board you can ride.
What construction does the Sunday come in?
Firewire built the Sunday in Helium – a stringerless EPS core with paulownia and balsa wood rails and a composite deck skin. We have stocked it in Helium, in Helium with Volcanic basalt lamination, and in a limited-edition Thunderbolt build. The Sunday is not in Firewire’s current range, so the boards on this page are the sizes and constructions we have left. Each board lists its construction and fin boxes.
Can I custom order a Sunday?
No – Firewire builds its models in set stock sizes rather than customs, and the Sunday has been retired from Firewire’s current line, so we can no longer special order it. The boards listed on this page are what is available; if you like the idea of a Machado twin or mid-length, the Too Fish, Seaside & Beyond and Xtra Cado are the current models to look at.
From Firewire
"Sunday mornings for me start later than most mornings.
It’s really a family day.... We wake up, take it slow.... Might be a surf involved before breakfast with my daughter or my son, but we’re never in a hurry to get there. We usually go to the farmer’s market before noon and stock up on produce.
In the afternoon I’ll ride my bicycle down to Cardiff reef and maybe paddle out the 7-foot Sunday for a cruise. Then before sunset I’ll ride the 5’6 at Seaside if its good.
My favorite thing about the Sunday is how it occupies both sides of the spectrum. I ride both the 5’6 and the 7’0. That covers a lot of territory.
The 5’6 is about six liters more volume than I’d normally ride in a shortboard. And that’s the most important thing - size up your Sunday. Don’t be shy. Ride more volume and relax.
If you want to draw out turns and flow, ride it as a single fin. You can set it up as a twin fin if you want to liven it up. It’s a win both ways. Sunday is always fun."
