What size Bush Ranger Step-Up should I get?
The Bush Ranger is a step-up, so ride it longer than your everyday shortboard; a common rule of thumb for a step-up is 2" to 4" longer, with the longer end for bigger, hollower days. At a given length it carries about the same volume as a standard performance shortboard, so the extra length is where the paddle power and hold come from. For example, if you ride a 5’11 shortboard at about 28.5 L, look at the 6’1 (19 3/8" x 2 1/2", 30.90 L) to the 6’3 (19 5/8" x 2 1/2", 33.10 L). Stock sizes run from 5’10 (19" x 2 3/8", 28.00 L) to 6’8 (20 1/4" x 2 3/4", 39.60 L). Our shop staff can help you pick a size.
What fins does the Bush Ranger Step-Up use?
The Bush Ranger is a thruster, and we stock it with FCS II or Futures boxes. Neither FCS nor Futures publishes a pick for Mark Richards’ models, so for a step-up built for hold and drawn-out lines in good surf we recommend a raked, drive-oriented template: on FCS II the Mayhem Driver Tri (Small, Medium, Large), a Carver-family fin with more sweep for hold and longer turns; on Futures, the Mayhem 3.0 (Small, Medium, Large) or the R-series Blackstix (R4, R6, R8). FCS sizes these fins by weight: Small 120–155 lbs, Medium 145–175 lbs, Large 165–200 lbs. Futures sizes its fins as Small 95–135 lbs, Medium 125–175 lbs and Large 165 lbs and up.
