The Flying Fish is a performance fish, so ride it at your regular shortboard volume or 1 to 2 L more, shorter and wider than your shortboard. Comparing stock dims, it runs about 3" to 4" shorter than a standard performance shortboard of the same volume. For example, if you ride a 5’11 shortboard at about 28.5 L, look at the 5’9 (19 7/8" x 2 3/8", 29.40 L), or the 5’10 (20" x 2 1/2", 31.80 L) if you want more float. Stock sizes run from 5’7 (19 5/8" x 2 3/8", 28.10 L) all the way to 7’6 (22 1/4" x 3", 54.40 L), so bigger surfers and anyone who wants a fish with mid-length float are covered. The Flying Fish comes with five fin boxes (FCS II or Futures), and Mark Richards says the standard fin set-up is 5 fin, so you can ride it as a thruster or as a quad. Neither FCS nor Futures publishes a pick for Mark Richards’ models, so for a performance fish that is meant to be surfed rail to rail we recommend a drivey tri-quad set: on FCS II the Mayhem Pivot Tri-Quad, a 5-fin set with the Lost Mayhem Pivot template; on Futures, the Mayhem 3.0 5-Fin (Medium, Large). Ride the thruster set in punchier surf and switch to the quad for extra speed and drive on fat, small days. FCS sizes these fins by weight: Small 120–155 lbs, Medium 145–175 lbs, Large 165–200 lbs. Futures sizes its fins as Small 95–135 lbs, Medium 125–175 lbs and Large 165 lbs and up.
