Mid Q&A
What size Mid should I get?
Size it like a mid-length: 6–12 inches longer than your shortboard with noticeably more volume. The sizes we have stocked run 6’8 to 8’0 – 6’10 is about 21 1/4” x 2 3/4” and 46 L, 7’0 about 21 1/4” x 2 5/8” and 49 L, 7’4 about 21 1/2” x 2 3/4” and 53 L, and 8’0 about 22 5/8” x 3” and 60 L. A surfer on a 6’0 shortboard usually lands on the 6’10 or 7’0; bigger surfers and longboarders stepping down will be happier on the 7’4 to 8’0. Quiet Flight boards are hand-shaped, so check the exact dims on each board.
What fins does the Mid use?
Most Mids are set up as a 2+1 – a center fin box with two FCS II side-bite boxes – and some come with five FCS II boxes so they can be ridden as a thruster or quad; each listing shows the board’s boxes. For the 2+1, run a 7” to 8” center fin (roughly an inch of fin per foot of board) with FCS II Side Byte fins for drive and a looser feel, or the center fin alone for pure trim. On a five-box Mid, a balanced quad or thruster set such as the FCS II Performer works well.
What waves is the Mid for?
Quiet Flight describes it as a great mid-sized fun shape for small and large conditions. It is at its best in small, weak waves where the length, width and volume get you in early and gliding, but the rail line and rounded pin let it handle a bigger day too.
Who is the Mid for?
Surfers who want more paddle power and glide than a shortboard without going to a longboard – beginners who want a stable, easy-paddling board, longboarders stepping down to something that turns more easily, and experienced surfers who want a cruisy board for small days.
How is the Mid different from a longboard or the Stingfish?
It is shorter and easier to turn than a longboard, with a rounded pin and a 2+1 or five-box fin setup rather than a single fin. Compared with Quiet Flight’s Stingfish – a performance fun shape with a wing swallow tail that we usually stock at 7’0 to 7’6 with a thruster or five-fin setup – the Mid is the more traditional egg-style mid-length built for glide.
What construction does the Mid come in?
We stock the Mid in PU (poly), hand-shaped by Quiet Flight in Cocoa Beach. Each board on this page lists its construction and fin boxes.
Can I custom order a Mid?
