Glydra Q&A
What size Glydra should I get?
…Lost designed the Glydra to be ridden about 12" longer than you would ride a Hydra or another fish, or even 12" taller than your own height, depending on skill level and preference. That lines up with our general mid-length rule: 6" to 12" longer than your regular shortboard, with more volume, though not always more width. For example, if you ride a 5’11 shortboard or a 5’5 Hydra, look at the 6’5 to 6’11 (37.00 L to 45.50 L), and go to the longer end for the full glider feel. Stock sizes run from 6’2 (19.63" x 2.53", 33.00 L) to 7’8 (22.75" x 3.03", 57.50 L). What fins does the Glydra use?
The Glydra has five fin boxes (FCS II or Futures), so you can ride it as a thruster or a quad. Neither FCS nor Futures lists this model in its …Lost guide, so we follow the same pick as the Hydra it is stretched from: the template both brands pair with …Lost’s small-wave boards. The template to look for is a raked, drive-oriented fin: on FCS II the Mayhem Driver Tri (Small, Medium, Large), with the Mayhem Driver quad rears (Medium, Large) for a quad. FCS classes the Mayhem Driver as a Carver-family fin: an elongated template with more sweep (rake), built for hold and longer, drawn-out turns. FCS sizes these fins by weight: Small 120–155 lbs, Medium 145–175 lbs, Large 165–200 lbs. On Futures, the Mayhem 3.0 5-Fin (Medium, Large) gives you the same rake template in a thruster-plus-quad set, or use the R-series Blackstix (R4, R6, R8) as a thruster. Futures sizes its fins as Small 95–135 lbs, Medium 125–175 lbs and Large 165 lbs and up.
How is the Glydra different from the Hydra?
The Glydra is the Hydra stretched into a mid-length, ridden about 12" longer, but …Lost did not simply stretch it and call it a day. The Pelagic side-cut outline is retained but reduced in intensity, the triple concave with chined rails is kept, and the overall rocker is increased as the boards grow in length, especially under the feet, so the longer rail line fits the curve of smaller waves and the board never feels stiff or sticky. The result is a board that paddles and trims like a glider but still turns, changes direction quickly and feels loose in sub-par surf.
What waves is the Glydra for?
Small, weak and sub-par surf. The idea came from Heritage Surfboards in New Jersey, whose customers were riding the Hydra in their typically tiny waves, and the Glydra adds mid-length paddle power and glide: it catches any wave with ease and trims along until the last bit of whitewater crumbles onto the shore, yet still performs, with quick direction changes and full-rail cutbacks in lifeless surf.
How did the Glydra come about?
While chasing hurricanes in New Jersey in summer 2020, Matt Biolos surfed with the crew from Heritage Surfboards, who mentioned how popular the Hydra was in their tiny surf and suggested stretching it into a mid-length, “a cross between your Smooth Operator and Hydra, kind of a mid-length fish type of thing”. Back home, Biolos developed the design to be free and loose on the face rather than linear, keeping and adjusting the Hydra’s key design elements.
Is the Glydra a mid-length or a fish?
Both, in a way: …Lost describes it as a mid-length glider version of the Hydra, and says you can call it a long fish, a mini-glider or mid-length Mayhem. It has the paddle and trim of a mid-length with the wide Hydra tail, side-cut outline and triple concave that keep it loose and fun in small surf.
