What is C4 construction?
C4 stands for Carbon Corked Capped Composite. It is the culmination of two years of research and development between Matt Biolos and St. Augustine, Florida board wizard Drew Daggett of Inspired Surfboards, building on their previous creation, the C3 with exposed cork. A C4 board consists of a 1.5 lb EPS core, 1.5 mm of cork covering the whole deck and rails, and standard glassing over the top. That creates a “sandwich” effect: you get the benefits of having cork on the board, but it is still a traditionally glassed board.
What does the cork in a C4 board do?
Traditionally, EPS boards are ridden mostly in smaller surf because of their high float and light weight, and in high wind or larger surf they can feel squirrely and chattery. The cork absorbs impact, suppresses those chatters and adds a bit of extra weight to the board, while still keeping it lighter than a traditional PU board, so when conditions are windy or the surf is big, a C4 board still performs at a high level. How is C4 different from C3?
C3 was Biolos and Daggett’s first cork construction, with the cork left exposed on the board.
